Organizational and administrative factors influencing the adoption of consortia programs by rural hospitals
Article Abstract:
Rural hospitals have been less involved than might be expected in the creation and management of consortia, according to a study of 127 hospitals belonging to nine rural consortia. Only 38% of these hospitals were involved in forming the consortia, and approximately 44% participate in the group's governance. It was found that physicians' or board members' participation in hospital decisions positively influenced the number of consortia programs adopted by that hospital. However, physician involvement in hospital decision-making was low. Research methodology and conclusions are analyzed.

CEO turnover in rural Northwest hospitals
Article Abstract:
CEO turnover occurred in 78 out of 148 rural hospitals in four northwestern states during the three-year period between 1987 and 1990. CEO responses to a questionnaire on the conditions under which they left their hospitals are analyzed. The majority who resigned within four years sought better positions elsewhere. More turnover was found in small hospitals than in larger institutions. The need for strategies to attract and retain qualified administrators for rural northwestern hospitals is indicated, and suggestions for this are discussed.
