Establishing an Appropriate Role for Physician Involvement in Hospital Departmental Operations
Article Abstract:
Hospital based physicians have three distinct relationships with a hospital. They are legislative, professional, and administrative. The legislative relationship is usually a physician's involvement with a medical committee or board as defined by the bylaws of the medical staff and hospital. The professional relationship between patient and physician within the hospital is governed by a contract as well as medical staff and corporate bylaws. The administrative relationship concerns the physician's involvement with the specific department to which he relates. The unit medical director concept describes a physician who provides direct medical input into the operations, decisions, and plans for the cost center of the hospital. An appendix provides the job description of such a position.
