The advanced practice movement in nursing: impact on perinatal care
Article Abstract:
Tripling the number of advanced practice nurses (APNs) in the US from 1987-1997 has improved the quality of health care. APNs include nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists, and certified registered nurse anesthetists. Advanced practice nursing faces barriers in prescription writing, inconsistent third party reimbursement, and consistent regulation, but has clearly improved the quality of perinatal care.

The promise of clinical pathways
Article Abstract:
Institutions which establish clinical pathways for obstetric care have reported favorable clinical and financial results. Pathways emphasize patient outcomes rather than staff behavior. The best pathway work is transdisciplinary, inductive, deductive, and data driven. Clinical pathways permit institutions to provide high quality care while indicating how to utilize materials and control costs.
