The future: society and government working together on wound care

Article Abstract:

Care providers, communities, and government resources must collaborate in order to adequately care for persons with chronic wounds. Community collaboratives should establish planning advisory committees whose members include health care professionals, persons who receive services, and advocates. Resistance to change, lack of understanding, and prejudice against disabled persons are barriers to collaboration. Managed-care organizations should be evaluated on their commitment to their communities.

Leg ulcers in patients with sickle cell disease

Article Abstract:

Patients with sickle cell disease are at risk for chronic leg ulcers caused by the patients' oxygen-depleted hemoglobin. Care and treatment can involve use of human erythropoietin to stimulate growth of healthy tissue and encourage growth of red blood cell precursors. Surgery is also a management option, but should be considered only in extreme circumstances.

The scientific basis of healing

Article Abstract:

Moist environments seem to facilitate wound healing better than traditional gauze dressings. Dressings able to retain moisture appear to promote faster healing and reduce infection risks. Systemic and local conditions or risk factors can hamper the healing process. The importance of wound assessment and the typical stages of normal healing are also described.
