The ratio of costs to charges: how good a basis for estimating costs?
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the accuracy of medical care costs derived from the ratio of costs to charges (RCCs) using relative value units (RVUs) as basis revealed that said costs they were not a good basis for determining the costs of individual patients. RCCs performed better when examining average costs per diagnosis-related group (DRG). In comparing the relative costs of patients in a DRG in one hospital to the average cost of patients in that DRG in a group of hospitals, RCCs were even more reliable.

Health care and the 1996 election
Article Abstract:
Health care will play a very significant role in the 1996 presidential election. It ranks fourth among the issues of the presidential campaign. About 63% of the American respondents in a survey conducted indicated that a candidate's position on health care would be a significant determinant in their ability to win votes. Politicians will have to seek the advice of health policy aficionados for reform proposals suitable to the current political situation.

Judging hospitals by severity-adjusted mortality rates: the case of CABG surgery
Article Abstract:
The mortality rates of hospitals are typically compared by accounting for the severity of patients they treat. A survey of patients about to undergo coronary artery bypass graft surgery found that they chose their hospitals according to reports and standards of published mortality rates which are adjusted for patient severity. However, comparisons based on severity-adjusted information are still unreliable in predicting a hospital's mortality rate.
