Three major models; before you build your network, consider these legal angles
Article Abstract:
Integrated delivery systems can be modeled after three basic models. A management service organization (MSO) allows participants to form a separate entity and is most popular with physicians. MSOs bring different practices together and allows diverse ownership. Foundations provide a delivery system with a tax-exempt status providing the system with lower-costs, and exemption from federal and local taxes. In a fully integrated delivery system there is strong control between hospital entities and physicians lose their autonomy and it provides a better financial advantage because it spreads the risk between hospitals and physicians.

Laboratory regulations create new opportunities for hospitals
Article Abstract:
The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988, which took effect on Sep 1, 1992, will impact both hospital laboratories and medical office laboratories. The more stringent regulation and additional paperwork created by the amendments are causing many physicians to refer to hospital labs some of the more complicated tests that they previously performed in office. Hospitals can benefit not only from the additional laboratory business, but also through offering assistance with compliance and paperwork.

Short stays or short cuts?
Article Abstract:
Psychiatric institutions are sending patients home after shorter periods of care, as the principles of managed care spread to mental health. Overall cost of mental health care dropped about 14% as more outpatient care was provided. Medicare and Medicaid programs have permitted a higher number of patients to be treated, but some observers question whether patients are receiving the care they need.
