What are the costs of queueing for hip fracture surgery in Canada?
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the impact of waiting time for hip fracture surgery in Canada on the length of hospital stay and inpatient mortality after operation. Results showed that pre-surgery delay has only a minimal impact on length of stay and mortality. Patients coming from higher income postal-codes endure somewhat shorter delays but income does not significantly affect post-surgery variables. However, surgery delay for hip fracture patients may result in greater pre-surgery inpatient expenses and more discomfort.

A theory of hospital waiting lists
Article Abstract:
Hospital waiting lists are found in a number of countries with national health services and may be exacerbated by political structures that contain a budgetary incentive that contribute to long waits. A theory of waiting lists, with similarities to Kornai's analysis of planned economies, is proposed. Methods of counteracting forces that encourage long waiting lists are considered, including a reward tied to number of discharges and introduction of elements of competition among providers.
