Where have all the RNs gone?
Article Abstract:
A study of 178 hospitals conducted by the Hay Group reveals that 81% of patient care managers are confronting a shortage of registered nurses (RNs) and unlicensed assistants. While experienced nurses with advanced degrees are now in demand as hospitals care for sicker patients and amplify the tasks handled by better-trained personnel, several adverse factors are coming to play, such as the decline of undergraduate enrollment for the third consecutive year, by 6.6% in 1997. Cost-cutting efforts may also be blamed, as nursing supporters claim that hospitals have cut the number of RNs and increased the proportion of lower-paid aides. California Nurses Association executive director Rose Ann DeMoro notes that such practices have left nurses demoralized, spurring some to leave the profession.
