Single-specialty healthcare firms, which are very popular with investors, anger and worry general hospitals. Firms such as MedCath which operates a Little Rock, AR, cardiology hospital, are stealing hospitals' market share in specialties ranging from cancer to rehabilitation. Single-specialty firms give surgeons and referring doctors a portion of profits, thereby gaining the practitioners' loyalty. That practice is attracting regulators' attention.

Samaritan Health System and Mercy Healthcare Arizona, previously bitter rivals, have decided to merge in Phoenix. Samaritan has $355 million in debt and both systems believe they will save $40 million to $50 million annually by combining their services. They want to retain their charitable services which accounted for $27 million in care during 1996.
