1999 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards Presented
Article Abstract:
Six scientists received the 1999 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards on October 1, 1999. Clay M. Armstrong, Bertil Hille, and Roderick MacKinnon won a Basic Medical Research Award for their work on ion channels. These are small channels in cell membranes that transport small ions such as sodium, potassium and calcium. David W. Cushman and Miguel A. Ondetti won the Clinical Medical Research Award for work that resulted in the development of ACE inhibitors. Seymour S. Kety won the Award For Special Achievement in Medical Science for his research on schizophrenia.

1998 Albert Lasker and Gairdner Foundation International Medical Research Winners Honored
Article Abstract:
The Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards honor significant contributions to medical science, and many recipients have ultimately been awarded the Nobel Prize for their scientific work. The Gairdner Foundation International Awards honor major advances among Canadian medical scientists. The 1998 recipients were honored for their work in genetics, cell biology, microbial genetics and physiology, reproductive physiology, cancer biology and treatment, and other research areas.

2000 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards

Six scientists were awarded the 2000 Albert Lasker Medical Research Awards on September 22 in New York City. Aaron Ciechanover, Avram Hershko, and Alexander Varshavsky won the Basic Medical Research Award, Harvey J. Alter and Michael Houghton won the Clinical Medical Research Award, and Sidney Brenner won the Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science.
