A 31-year-old woman with lumbar and abdominal pain, hypertension, and a retroperitoneal mass

Article Abstract:

A 31-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital for abdominal and lower back pain. CT and MRI scans revealed a large mass in her lower abdomen. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a mass around the lower aorta. The mass was removed and microscopic analysis revealed collagen deposits and an infiltration of immune cells called T lymphocytes. The final diagnosis was idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. Her pain disappeared after the operation. She was given corticosteroids because many physicians believe this disease is an autoimmune disorder.

A 60-year-old woman with epidural and paraspinal masses

Article Abstract:

A 60-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital because of incontinence and pain in her lower back. A CT scan of her back showed a mass in her spine, pelvic bones and thighbone as well as in her kidneys, thigh and lungs. Analysis of needle biopsy specimens from her lungs revealed a microorganism called Nocardia asteroides. The organism was also found in her urine. However, her bone disease resembled cancer rather than a chronic infection. A biopsy of the mass in her thigh showed that she had a B-cell lymphoma.
