A conceptual model of the effects of health care organizations on the quality of medical care

Article Abstract:

A strategy is presented for evaluating the impact of an HMO's organizational structure and how it impacts physician behavior. HMOs have traditionally hired physicians on salary or contracted with individual or group practices. However, some HMOs incorporate more than one of these models, which makes it difficult to analyze quality control indicators. Most HMOs use financial incentives to change physician behavior, but management controls, structural capabilities and the normative environment are also worthy of consideration.

Quality of care in Medicaid managed care and commercial health plans

Article Abstract:

A study compares the quality of care within and between the Medicaid and commercial populations in three types of managed care plans. Findings indicate that Medicaid managed care enrollees receive lower-quality care than that received by commercial managed care enrollees in both Medicaid-only plans and in commercial plans that also serve Medicaid beneficiaries.
