A touching subject
Article Abstract:
Nurses from Israel have received training in the United Kingdom in palliative care which could alter the way terminally ill and elderly people are treated in Israeli hospitals. The project has been organised by the Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund. Israel's health-care system is based on the UK's National Health System and is perceived as one of the leading systems worldwide. The Israeli nurses are keen to learn palliative care as the existing system in Israel tends to focus more on intensive care. The nurses aim to spread their training to other hospital staff on their return to Israel.

Measures for comfort and joy: Thomas Creedon's parents would like him to be allowed to die. If the law decides in favour nurses may have to decide what is meant by 'quality of life'
Article Abstract:
There have been an increasing number of cases which cause medical and nursing staff ethical dilemmas. Nurses may find themselves involved in ending life, and having to determine what is meant by 'quality of life.' The case of Thomas Creedon, whose parents are seeking permission for him to be allowed to die as he is in constant pain and cannot see, hear or speak is examined. A nurse at a hospice for terminally ill children feels that pain does not mean that a life is worthless or should be terminated.

The end of the line
Article Abstract:
Several night telephone helplines manned by health visitors are operating in the UK. Parents can seek advice without the need to call out a GP. Most of the calls are not serious, but health visitors need to reassure the carer, according to Penny O'Bee, who mans a helpline in Hampshire. Health visitors work on a rota system.
