AMA to oppose liability protections for tobacco products

Article Abstract:

Delegates to the American Medical Assn's 1995 meeting voted to oppose any tort-reform provisions that would protect tobacco products or companies from liability. The American College of Preventive Medicine's Ronald M. Davis, MD, said that the group, along with Michigan physicians, recommended the policy because the tobacco industry has already succeeded in gaining such protections in product-liability legislation passed in Texas and California.

Making sure your voice is heard: the AMA advanced medicine's key issues on Capitol Hill this year and is primed to continue the work in 1997

Article Abstract:

Laws and policies passed in 1996 largely benefit patients and physicians, thanks partly to the hard work of the American Medical Assn. Health insurance reform, antitrust reform, FDA oversight of tobacco, better fraud prevention measures, a ban on female genital mutilation, the recognition of mental illness as an illness equal to others, and a ban on drive-through births are among the measures that doctors helped create during the year.
