Artificial spinal disk superior to fusion for treating degenerative disk disease

Article Abstract:

A study suggests that the placement of an artificial intervertebral disk, called the ProDisc-L, can provide better functional results than spinal fusion in treating specific patients with degenerative disk disease like discogenic pain and spine instability. Disk replacement takes significantly less time than surgery and involves less blood loss, and the retention of some flexibility of lumbar spine results in less stress above and below the disk than in comparable areas above and below a fusion site.

New 3D imaging software opens new vistas

Article Abstract:

A three-dimensional (3D)-imaging software program called Volumap enables physicians to transform data from standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) into 3D images with unprecedented variety and resolution. The improved resolution of images results in more accurate diagnosis of urological problems in children, also eliminating the need for additional tests such as ultrasound, nuclear medicine scans and CT scans.

High suicide risk found for patients with head and neck cancer

Article Abstract:

Experts have reported that traditional treatment regimens and limited interventional therapies for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) have led to unanticipated social and psychological problems for such individuals, including an increase in the risk of suicide. The different factors contributing to the increased rate of suicide among HNC patients are discussed.
