Audit of nutrition screening in patients with acute illness

Article Abstract:

There is a high incidence of malnutrition in hospital patients which frequently goes unrecognised as doctors and nurses are not trained to look for it. A audit project was set up with the aim of improving patient care by making nurses more proactive in nutritional management. Nutritional standards were devised and it was found that nursing assessment of nutritional status was often non-existent. A staff training programme helped to to make significant improvements in nutritional management.

View from the independent acute health-care sector

Article Abstract:

The UK's independent health care sector now covers a wide range of services and facilities. Private hospitals are now able to undertake complex surgical procedures, and often have the latest medical equipment. Many now offer all the specialist treatment which is associated with the National Health Service, apart from accident and emergency work. Most acute private hospitals now also have extensive ongoing training programmes, and staff have direct control over budgets.

Body of evidence

Article Abstract:

A&E nurses may face ethical dilemmas when treating injuries which are crime related. Evidence can sometimes be unwittingly destroyed because of the need to treat quickly. Patient's clothing should be removed using gloves to prevent transfer of DNA. Blook samples may need to be taken and reserved for the police. All items found must be saved and photographs of a patient's wounds may be taken.
