Update: fatal air bag-related injuries to children - United States, 1993-1996

Article Abstract:

Children under the age of 12 should never ride in the front seat of a car that has a passenger-side air bag. Between Jan 1993 and Nov 1996, 32 children were killed by a passenger air bag. Twenty-one of the children were either not wearing seat belts or were wearing them improperly. Nine children had been sitting in the front seat in a child safety seat but were facing backward. Because children are smaller than adults and can not fit into adult seat belts, they are often closer to the air bag. If a child must sit in the front seat, the seat should be moved back as far as possible.
