Childhood Malnutrition and Postwar Reconstruction in Rural El Salvador: A Community-Based Survey

Article Abstract:

Many El Salvadoran refugees who returned to their villages following the 1992 peace settlement that ended the civil war are not receiving basic health services promised as part of an international aid package. A 1998 survey in Cuscatlan, El Salvador, found a high percentage of malnourished children. Thirty-two percent had stunted growth and stunting was more common in families that had little land to cultivate. Land redistribution was another goal of the 1992 peace settlement but less than half of newly transferred land was being cultivated by its owners. Lack of drinking water was also common among malnourished children.

Medical Innovation and the Critical Role of Health Technology Assessment

Article Abstract:

The US needs a national agency devoted to health technology assessment. The Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) was created in 1975 followed by the National Center for Health Care Technology in 1978. Both agencies were discontinued and there is now no national organization, public or private, for evaluating medical technology. The US is one of the few industrialized countries that does not have such a national focus.
