Digital necrosis with Ogilvie's syndrome
Article Abstract:
A case is presented of a 76-year-old man who had ischemia in his fingers that was ultimately traced to kidney cancer. Ischemia occurs when blood supply to a part of the body is reduced. His fingers had turned blue and gangrenous from lack of blood. A CT scan revealed a mass on his right kidney, which surgery revealed to be renal carcinoma. He also had a condition called Ogilvie's syndrome, which is characterized by apparent bowel obstruction without a clear cause. It is not known exactly how the tumor caused either condition.

"Rheumatoid nodules" and lymphoma! (Lesson of the Month)
Article Abstract:
Patients with rheumatoid-like nodules on their joints may not have rheumatoid arthritis. A 63-year-old woman was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis because of nodules on her hands, but she did not have all the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Two years later, she was hospitalized with enlarged lymph nodes and was diagnosed with a cancer called lymphoma. Despite chemotherapy, she died one year later. Her doctors believed the joint nodules were caused by the lymphoma.
