Do all nurses need to have a degree

The British Department of Health is considering whether to allow nurses to continue to qualify by earning a nursing diploma or if nurses will be required to graduate with a university degree. Wales and Northern Ireland have plans in place to move to an all graduate nursing staff.

Plans by Britain's top nursing officer Sarah Mullally to include communication skills benchmarks in her "Essence of Care" guidelines for nurses is examined. The author believes that good on-the-job training in communication skills is needed more that another standards guideline.
