Dr. Todd looks back at landmarks, land mines, and 'greatness of the AMA.' (former American Medical Association executive vice president James S. Todd)(Annual Meeting News)(Interview)
Article Abstract:
James S. Todd, who served as American Medical Association executive vice president from 1990 to 1996, believes President Clinton lost an opportunity to broaden access to health care through 'political arrogance' and secretiveness. Todd feels health care reform now will be incremental. He also believes for-profit companies currently taking over health care will leave the industry when physicians and patients demand better service. Todd is proud of the AMA's progressive influence, but worries about medical education.

To mandate or not to mandate: who should decide?
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn should educate the public on health issues to help patients choose their own appropriate treatment. Also, the AMA Council on Scientific Affairs should inform the public about the value and effectiveness of preventive services. Care should be taken before increasing the number of mandated benefits, although legislated preventive measures, such as childhood immunization services, have eradicated diseases.

Meet your employees' needs to improve office 'picture.'
Article Abstract:
Physicians should help create a productive office environment in a private practice through effective personnel management. Employees in a medical office should be appreciated for the work they perform well. Also, employees' salaries should be competitive with similar jobs in local hospitals or other offices. Physicians should also schedule work flow so that employees can take breaks and have time off for lunch.
