Efficacy of pamidronate in reducing skeletal complications in patients with breast cancer and lytic bone metastases

Article Abstract:

Monthly pamidronate disodium infusions may protect against skeletal complications in women with advanced breast cancer who have bone lesions. Researchers found infusions of 90 mg of pamidronate superior to placebo in 380 breast cancer patients with respect to delay in skeletal complications, related pain intensity, and overall deterioration. In addition, pamidronate was well tolerated except in three patients who withdrew from the study due to related toxicity. Pamidronate had no affect on overall survival rates.

Autoantibody signatures in prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

Phage protein microarrays, created with a phage-display library obtained from prostate-cancer tissue and were used to examine serum samples from several patients with prostate cancer. Findings from the experiment reveal that autoantibodies against peptides obtained from prostate-cancer tissue could be employed as the base for a screening test for prostate cancer.

Pamidronate to prevent bone loss during androgen-deprivation therapy for prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

The drug pamidronate disodium (Aredia) can prevent bone loss in men with prostate cancer who are treated with leuprolide (Lupron Depot). Leuprolide is used to block the action of male sex hormones called androgens, which can stimulate the growth of the tumor.
