Epilepsy education

Article Abstract:

The National Society for Epilepsy (NSE) aims to raise epilepsy awareness among health professionals, with associate membership being offered to give access to epilepsy research and education. The NSE offers long-term care to those with epilepsy, as well as rehabilitation, treatment, medical assessment and research. Nurses are being educated by the NSE to better understand caring for epilepsy patients. The NSE answers up to 10,000 inquiries annually, aiming to provide information to the public as well as professionals. The NHS-funded assessment unit aims to assess drug regimes and seizures, while the LINKS rehabilitation service prepares people for living in the community.

Vitamins: how much do we need?

Article Abstract:

There is now widespread knowledge among health professionals and the general public in the UK about the impact of vitamins and their sources. However, views about the most appropriate levels of specific vitamins in a person's diet have changed considerably over recent years. It is becoming accepted that most people obtain enough vitamins from their diet, and that they should seek advice from their doctor if this is not the case. Despite this, expenditure in the UK on vitamin and mineral supplements has now reached 100 million pounds sterling a year.

Massage

Article Abstract:

Many nurses have recognised the therapeutic value of massage. It involves manipulation of muscles and soft tissues to relieve stiffness and tension. It induces a relaxed state. It has proved beneficial in treatment of stress-related illnesses such as headaches and may also be helpful for high blood pressure, rheumatism and asthma. Little research exists but studies have suggested its value in stimulating growth in premature babies and reducing anxiety in young psychiatric patients.
