Evidence for differences in MT2 cell tropism according to genetic subtypes of HIV-1: syncytium-inducing variants seem rare among subtype C HIV-1 viruses

Article Abstract:

The development of syncytium-inducing strains of HIV may affect the progression from HIV infection to AIDS in patients infected with some viral subtypes. Researchers tested MT-2 cells from 86 HIV patients. Sycytium-inducing viral variants were rare in patients infected with HIV subtype C, but common in those infected with subtype E. This finding may influence the prognosis for the disease and the transmissibility of the infecting strain of virus.

Long-term benefits of highly active antiretroviral therapy in Senegalese HIV-1-infected adults

Article Abstract:

The long-term survival, the immunologic and virologic effectiveness, adherence and drug resistance in HIV-infected patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy in one of the oldest and the best-documented African cohorts is assessed. This study shows that clinical and biologic results similar to those seen in western countries can be achieved and sustained during the long term in Africa.

Most env and gag subtype A HIV-1 viruses circulating in West and West Central Africa are similar to the prototype AG recombinant virus IBNG

Article Abstract:

Researchers estimate that between 60% and 84% of the subtype A HIV-1 viruses in Wet Africa are recombinant AG-IBNG viruses, based on a study of 219 HIV-infected people. The AG-IBNG virus is one of the four circulating recombinant forms of HIV-1, and occurs predominantly in Africa.
