Final Stages of Poliomyelitis Eradication--Western Pacific Region, 1997-1998

Article Abstract:

Extensive vaccination campaigns have apparently eliminated wild poliovirus in the Western Pacific Region. In 1990, polio was still endemic in Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, and Vietnam. In 1991, many of these countries began supplemental vaccination programs. Cambodia and Vietnam established four National Immunization Days along the Mekong River and its tributaries between 1996 and 1998, where many residents do not have access to vaccination. Because of these efforts, the number of reported polio cases in the Western Pacific Region dropped from approximately 6,000 in 1990 to zero in 1998.

Quality of malnutrition assessment surveys conducted during famine in Ethiopia

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to identify common methodological errors in nutrition assessments and surveys, and to provide practical recommendations for improvement. Major methodological errors were identified among 30*30 cluster surveys designed to measure acute malnutrition prevalence in Ethiopia during the famine of 1999-2000. It is suggested that donor agencies and NGOs should be educated about the need for improved quality of nutrition assessments.
