E-publish or perish? On-line media offer new opportunities - and concerns about quality

Article Abstract:

Electronic publishing of medical information offers opportunities and challenges. Publishers of prestigious journals warn that rushing into print may bypass necessary review, and articles downloaded from the Internet may contain errors. The JAMA and other prominent medical journals maintain sites on the Internet to list information about their publications. Also, several highly respected journals produce both print and on-line versions.

Follow the blue brick road

Article Abstract:

Hyperlinks make it possible for Internet users to move quickly and nearly effortlessly from site to site. They are especially useful as research tools, because they reflect the tangential and unpredictable ways in which humans learn. To the novice user, hyperlinks can make the amount of information available on the Internet seem even more overwhelming, but to the experienced user, hyperlinks can help lead the way to desired information.

Article Abstract:

Intranets are rapidly becoming the preferred method of communications for the medical field as hospitals, insurers, and other health groups are establishing internal communication networks that use Internet technology. Intranets provide secure communications because only authorized users can access information. They can vary in sophistication from those providing basic, general information to those that provide total interactivity.
