Guarding the files: your role in maintaining the confidentiality of patient records

Article Abstract:

A well-written patient consent form can protect a dentist from legal liability when releasing confidential patient information. Dentists are encouraged to maintain the privacy of dental records by the American Dental Association, but many insurers and managed care organizations must see patient records. Many states have laws protecting the confidentiality of medical records, but they may not apply to dental records. Dentists should ask all new patients to sign a consent form and should update it periodically.
