Hand and arm vibration

Article Abstract:

Hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) is caused by the use of vibrating tools, such as in construction work. Around 4.9 million workers experience HTV in a one week period. The condition causes the blood supply to fingers, toes and less often to the nose and ears to be reduced leading to the extremities becoming white and painful. They sometimes have to be amputated. BG Occupational Health Group Head Dr Jonathan Ross suggests an employees susceptibility to HTV should be calculated before they are employed and those using vibrating equipment should be checked regularly.

Stress appalling

Article Abstract:

Harmful levels of workplace stress can affect the performance, judgement and health of employees. It is estimated that 80 million working days are lost due to stress related illness, according to the Confederation of British Industry, and mental illness costs the NHS 14% of its in-patient care budget. Employers should undertake stress generating management practices to eliminate individuals suffering physical, mental and emotional stress.

Bon voyage!

Article Abstract:

There are many health and safety risks associated with business travel, and it is very important for companies to take these into account. Indeed, some observers believe that companies which send employees abroad on business have a moral responsibility to employ experts to assess the risks involved. Once the expert has looked at business travel within a specific company, it is possible to develop a customised programme of advice, vaccination and prophylaxis.
