Helping supervisees to get the most out of their supervisory experience

Article Abstract:

The Wirral Health Authority in the UK has established a study day to help supervised nurses achieve the utmost from the clinical supervision process. The study day dispels any fear that clinical supervision involves a power relationship. It emphasizes that clinical supervision is based on equality, and that supervised nurses should not perceive challenges as personal criticisms, but rather as a means to professional growth. The Wirral study day includes an examination of learning theory, and discussion on helpful procedures during the clinical supervision process.

Speaking out

Article Abstract:

A 45-year-old senior nurse describes the joys of returning to study. She undertook a masters degree course in medical anthropology in response to the new professional requirement that all nurse tutors should be graduates. She very much enjoyed being part of the learning environment, despite the challenge of fitting study time around her work and family life, and gained her master's degree with the allowance of one study day per week over two years.
