Illness belongs to the people

Article Abstract:

The new NHS Direct telephone advice line launched in the UK by the National Health Service has been highly successful in dealing with patients suffering from the flu. The service, which currently covers 65% of the UK, took an average of 5,000 calls per day during autumn 1999, with 10,600 on Christmas Day and 14,800 on New Year's Day. It is suggested that the attention paid to the patient by the nurse over the telephone may have alot to do with the success of the service, in comparison to GP's tendencies to generalise when faced with a plethora of patients seeking help in a surgery.
