Article Abstract:

The UK government has opened the way for over 40,700 residential and nursing home nurses to join a recognised trade union. The two unions that represent nurses and care assistance are Unison and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). Unison is anticipating an extra 400,000 new members because it also represents support and care workers. Unison is studying methods of recruitment used by the US Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which gained an extra 100,000 member via nursing home initiatives. Existing care home operators claim that union recognition would be limited unless the law was revised.

Local pay RIP?

Article Abstract:

Nurses in the United Kingdom are hoping that a February 1997 news leak signifies the end of local pay bargaining in their profession. Local pay bargaining has not provided nurses with much money and is disliked throughout the profession. At ten months into the 1996-97 financial year, 53% of English health trusts have not settled claims, and those nurses who have negotiated deals have received an average rise of 1%. The news leak describes a 3.3% national pay award but also suggests this will be in two phases, limiting the current year's rise to 2.43%.
