Patient-reported nonadherence to HAART is related to protease inhibitor levels
Article Abstract:
An HIV patient's compliance with treatment can be monitored by asking the patient whether he or she has ever missed a dose. In a study of 140 HIV patients, many who said they had missed a dose also had undetectable blood levels of the drug.

Incidence and determinants of bacterial infections in HIV-positive patients receiving anti-Pneumocystis carinii/Toxoplasma gondii primary prophylaxis within a randomized clinical trial
Article Abstract:
Cotrimoxazole and dapsone-pyrimethamine do not appear to prevent bacterial infections in HIV patients who take these drugs to prevent Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. This was the conclusion of a study of 244 HIV patients which found that hospitalization and catheterization were the biggest risk factors for a bacterial infection.

Changing disease patterns in focal brain lesion-causing disorders in AIDS
Article Abstract:
Toxoplasmosis encephalitis no longer appears to be the predominant cause of brain lesions in AIDS patients. Researchers analyzed the causes of brain lesions in 239 AIDS patients with a brain lesion between 1991 and 1996. Over this period, fewer patients were diagnosed with toxoplasmosis encephalitis and more patients were diagnosed with primary central nervous system lymphoma and progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy. Cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex as the cause of brain lesions also increased in frequency during this period.
