Influenza vaccine, 1997-1998

Article Abstract:

The influenza vaccine is now available for the 1997-1998 influenza season. The components are similar to those in previous years, with only one new antigen added. Vaccination is advised for elderly and high risk patients, but many others may benefit, including healthy working adults and pregnant women. The influenza season in the US usually peaks from late December to early March. It is best to receive vaccination from October through mid November for optimal protection during the peak period. Influenza vaccine is made from the inactivated virus, and adverse reactions are uncommon.

Influenza vaccine, 1996-1997

Article Abstract:

A new trivalent vaccine for the prevention of influenza is recommended for the elderly, high-risk patients, and those working with them. The A/Nanchang antigen is new for the 1996-1997 influenza season. Single doses of the vaccine should suffice if taken early in the fall season. Except for sore injection sites, no adverse side effects are likely. Children may react with pain and fever briefly.

Influenza vaccine, 1998-1999

Article Abstract:

A new influenza vaccine will be used in the 1998-1999 flu season. The appearance of a new variant of the influenza virus made the 1997-1998 vaccine less effective than usual. So two antigens were added to the 1998-1999 vaccine to cover this variant. Children, the elderly, high-risk patients and health care workers should be vaccinated. The vaccine is extremely safe and has few side effects.
