Long-term protection from myocardial ischemic events in a randomized trial of brief integrin beta-3 blockade with percutaneous coronary intervention

Article Abstract:

Abciximab appears to lower the risk of heart attack, death, and additional angioplasty in patients undergoing angioplasty to open clogged coronary arteries. Abciximab is a monoclonal antibody that blocks platelet aggregation, which is one of the steps in blood clot formation. A 2- to 3-year follow-up of 2,099 patients who were given abciximab or placebo during angioplasty found that abciximab significantly reduced the rate of heart attack, death or additional angioplasty. This is important because many patients treated with angioplasty often experience a recurrence of atherosclerosis.

Efficacy and bleeding complications among patients randomized to enoxaparin or unfractionated heparin for antithrombin therapy in non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes

Article Abstract:

Unstable angina combined with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (UA/NSTEMI) acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is the most common manifestations of coronary heart disease that lead to death. More than twenty thousand patients were studied across the ACS spectrum, and it was found that enoxaparin is more effective than unfractionated heparin in preventing combined end point of death or myocardial infarction.

Platelet Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Integrin Blockade With Eptifibatide in Coronary Stent Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Abstract:

The anticoagulant drug Integrilin may lower the risk of complications from stenting in patients with coronary artery disease, according to a study of 2,064 patients. Stents are small cylindrical devices that are placed inside coronary arteries to keep them open. However, this procedure can cause blood clot formation.
