Mainstreaming of prevention

Article Abstract:

A coalition of medical and business groups in California has formulated a set of preventative health guidelines to cover 17 major employers and 16 health plans, including the state-run Medi-Cal. The guidelines focus on procedures that have been proven effective. They include breast cancer screening, tetanus/diptheria booster vaccines and counseling on a range of topics such as smoking and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, a history of how the guidelines were developed is presented with a description of the individual benefits. Additional benefits may be added as their efficacy is established.

Fighting fragmentation

Article Abstract:

Some experts believe that women's health should become a new medical specialty because women's health needs are often fragmented and neglected under the current system. Other analysts argue that such a plan would 'ghettoize' women's health and allow other types of doctors to avoid considering women's needs. There is consensus, however, that a 'whole person' approach to women's medical care is important, and that the special needs of black, Latino and Native American women must be addressed.
