Prospective Evaluation of Risk Factors for Bloodstream Infection in Patients Receiving Home Infusion Therapy
Article Abstract:
The rate of bloodstream infections among outpatients receiving intravenous infusions is low, aside from those with one or more of some specific risk factors. Of 827 patients using 988 catheters observed over 69,532 catheter-days, a total of 69 bloodstream infections were found, an average rate of 0.99 infection per 1000 days. Factors which increased the risk of infection included recent bone marrow transplant, infusion outside of the home, previous bloodstream infection, and use of a multilumen catheter. Total risk per 1000 catheter-days ranged from 0.16 for patients with no risk factors to 6.77 for those with three or more.

Cost-Utility of Three Approaches to the Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea: Polysomnography, Home Testing, and Empirical Therapy
Article Abstract:
A sleep laboratory evaluation appears to cost-effectively diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, compared to home testing. In obstructive sleep apnea, breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Researchers compared the costs and benefits of a full sleep examination in a sleep laboratory with simpler home-based testing. The laboratory sleep test, followed by effective treatment when apnea was diagnosed, provided the greatest improvement in health and quality of life.
