National chiropractic legislative conference highlights appearances and meetings with top government officials: federal health policymakers commend ACA's initiative, leadership
Article Abstract:
Chiropractic leaders from each of the 50 states met in Washington in September 1991 to attend a two-day session with top government officials. Health-care policymakers from both the Office of the President and Congress acknowledged the efforts of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) to promote the profession's best interests and keep chiropractic issues on the federal health-care agenda. The American Chiropractic Association intends to work with the lawmakers in Washington to shape the future of health care in the United States. Issues covered at the conference included concerns regarding universal health-care access, affordable health services, freedom of choice by the consumer, and an obligation to maintain high professional standards. The Senate majority leader, George Mitchell, noted that in health care today instead of encouraging people to remain healthy, we tend to ''fix them after they get sick.'' The American Chiropractic Association has joined Health Care for America, a group of leading organizations promoting universal access to health care. Any health care legislation from Congress would not be complete unless it included the chiropractic profession. There are certain areas where chiropractic doctors are more effective than traditional organized medicine. The impressive line-up of health care officials who addressed the legislative conference clearly demonstrated the level of dialogue between the chiropractic profession and health-care policy makers. The impact of the aging revolution on chiropractic
Article Abstract:
Every year the United States population aged 65 years and over increases in both actual numbers and as a percentage of the overall population. Business and government are taking a greater interest in the elderly and the issues that affect them. Health practitioners need to prepare themselves for the increasing percentage of their patients who will be over 65 years of age. Chiropractors are in a good position to care for the aged population, as many of the problems of the elderly are musculoskeletal in nature. These individuals will be concerned with finding effective treatments that do not compromise the quality of their lives or limit their levels of activity. One of the main goals of the chiropractic profession is maintaining quality of life. The government is now addressing health care issues and the funding that will be required as the population ages. Chiropractic must make itself heard by elders and the government so that it will be included in future policy development. Many of the health problems faced by the elderly are preventable, such as falls, malnutrition, immobility, and mental impairment. These problems are thought by many to be inevitable results of aging, but research does not confirm this theory. Chiropractors are specifically trained to deal with a number of these preventable problems. The chiropractic profession can and should play a vital role in caring for the elderly population.
