Neuropsychiatric assessment of orphans in one Romanian orphanage for 'unsalvageables.' (Letter from Babeni)(Romania)
Article Abstract:
Following the fall of the Ceausescu regime in Romania, the Western world discovered 40,000 Romanian children living in orphanages, where as many as 35% died every year. A team from the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA visited one such orphanage in Babeni, about 500 kilometers from Bucharest. One hundred seventy children, all of whom were labeled 'unsalvageable', lived in the orphanage. There was only one medical doctor, who worked 9 to 4, Monday to Friday. None of the attendants had any training and were so few in number that many of the children had little interaction with people. The children were adequately fed, but almost 95% had some type of language disorder. Seventy percent suffered from neglect or abuse. The team estimated that over half the children were not 'unsalvageable' and could probably live in foster care. Unfortunately, foster care is practically nonexistent in Romania and legal barriers may prevent many Americans from adopting these orphans.

Prevention of Vibrio vulnificus infections: assessment of regulatory educational strategies
Article Abstract:
A California law requiring restaurants to post information that oysters may be contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus is not entirely effective. The law was passed in 1991 to alert consumers that Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring marine organism that can contaminate oysters. Between May, 1993 and October, 1995, eleven cases of Vibrio poisoning occurred in Los Angeles. Ten patients were Hispanic and only half understood written English. Nine were men who drank alcohol regularly or had known liver disease. Seven of the patients died. A survey of seafood restaurants found that more than half did not display warning signs and many had signs in English only.
