Nurse practitioners: the South Thames RHA experience
Article Abstract:
Nurse practitioners have been common in some countries for three or four decades. UK developments have been slower, mostly due to a well established GP service. The South Thames RHA has evaluated 20 nurse practitioners with the aim of assessed patient satisfaction, consultation safety and effectiveness and the cost. The evaluation found that a nurse practitioner could spend more time with patients without costing as much as a GP. However patients felt there was a clear role for both GP and nurse practitioner in primary care.

Maintaining quality of life with a nurse-led care unit
Article Abstract:
Around 6,000 people in the UK suffer from motor neurone disease (MND) at any one time. This is a progressive disease, with most patients dying within three years of the first symptoms appearing. Motor neurones at all levels degenerate, and eventually both the upper and lower motor neurones die. There is no treatment which can alter the course of the disease, so treatment focuses on palliative care.

Children's nurse education in the community
Article Abstract:
Children's nurses in the community should be sensitive to the requirements of sick children and their families, according to research which investigated the preparation of children's nurses under the Project 2000 pre-registration programmes. Other recommendations include a more comprehensive course approval process and a review of the preparation programme after recent NHS changes and reforms.
