Article Abstract:

The Griffiths report is highly critical of standards at the North Staffordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, subject of continued controversy over experimental treatments for children. Particularly criticised is the trial of continuous negative extra-thoracic pressure ventilation (CNEP), for which the report says nurses were ill-equipped to cope.

The dissemination of anthrax bacteria in the US has raised awareness of the risk of a biological attack. For nurses, a key factor is avoiding being infected by whatever disease is involved in an attack. The World Health Organisation recommends the use of respiratory protection with particulate filters.
