Vietnam halts timber exports

Article Abstract:

Vietnam is faced with the serious problem of deforestation due to excessive logging, spreading of cultivated areas and dam projects. Much of Vietnam's natural forests were destroyed during the Vietnam War and since then a calculated 200, 000 hectares of forest have been denuded annually. However, the obvious solution of controlling timber industry is rousing opposition. Timber greatly contributes to Vietnam's economy as the third main export of the country. There will also be a shortage of wood supply since local residents use charcoal from wood to cook.

OLMEC SCULPTURES OF THE HUMAN FETUS

Article Abstract:

The fetus is one aspect of human life that has not been widely represented in sculpture, with exception to the ancient Olmecs of Mexico. Their stone sculptures of fetuses are estimated to be carved between 900 and 600 BC. A group of 21 sculptures were identified as representing fetuses. The unusual advanced knowledge of fetal development is explored in relation to other cultures.

Planning for biodiversity

Article Abstract:

Approximately five percent of the Earth's land is protected from habitat destruction. Extinction is proceeding at a rate that is 100 times greater than natural background rates. If human activity destroys 95% of the Earth's land, half of species would go extinct.
