Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (1 to 34) inhibits in vitro oxytocin-stimulated activity of pregnant baboon myometrium

Article Abstract:

Parathyroid hormone-related protein appears to inhibit uterine contraction. Researchers analyzed the effect of parathyroid hormone-related protein on the contraction of uterine muscle samples from pregnant baboons. The samples had been stimulated with oxytocin, which stimulates uterine contraction. Parathyroid hormone-related protein completely inhibited uterine contraction in the presence of oxytocin. This occurred regardless of what part of the uterus the samples came from.

A new concept of the significance of regional distribution of prostaglandin H synthase 2 throughout the uterus during late pregnancy: investigations in a baboon model

Article Abstract:

Synthesis of prostaglandins during labor occurs mostly in the lower part of the uterus and cervix, according to a study in baboons. Prostaglandins can cause the uterus to contract and the amount of prostaglandins is known to increase as pregnancy progresses.

Tissue-specific ontogenic expression of prostaglandin H synthase 2 in the ovine myometrium, endometrium, and placenta during late gestation and at spontaneous term labor

Article Abstract:

Both the uterus and placenta produce prostaglandin H synthase 2, which increases during pregnancy and labor, according to a study in pregnant sheep. This enzyme plays an important role in prostaglandin synthesis.
