Plasma-cell dyscrasia with polyneuropathy: the spectrum of POEMS syndrome
Article Abstract:
The distinction between polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome and osteosclerotic myeloma with peripheral neuropathy appears to be clinically irrelevant. Both POEMS syndrome and osteosclerotic myeloma are variations of plasma-cell dyscrasia with polyneuropathy, a rare disease, but how significantly they differ is not well understood. Of 2,714 patients with plasma-cell dyscrasia, 38 were identified who had polyneuropathy and displayed the symptoms of either POEMS syndrome or osteosclerotic myeloma. Of the patients who met the criteria for osteosclerotic myeloma, 84% also had cases involving many body organs and five patients fully met the criteria for POEMS syndrome, suggesting there is no significant difference between the two. Furthermore, patients with complete POEMS syndrome had about the same outcome as patients with an incomplete form of the syndrome.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy
Article Abstract:
Classic chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is characterized by the occurrence of symmetrical weakness in both proximal and distal muscles that progressively increases for more than two months. The most widely used treatments for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy consist of intravenous immune globulin, plasma exchange, and corticoteroids.
