Poxvirus zoonoses--putting pocks into context

Article Abstract:

International travel and the use of exotic animals as pets may increase the number of people who are infected by a poxvirus. Poxviruses are a group of viruses that includes the smallpox and chickenpox viruses. Except for smallpox, most poxvirus infections are not dangerous and symptoms may disappear even if the patient is not treated.

Response to smallpox vaccine in persons immunized in the distant past

Article Abstract:

People who were vaccinated with smallpox in the past can still be successfully vaccinated again, according to a study of 80 people. This group was actually less likely to have a major adverse reaction to the vaccine than people who have never been vaccinated against smallpox. Even when they had a reaction, it was usually less severe.

The genetic archaeology of influenza

Article Abstract:

Clinical and epidemiologic implication is accomplished by performing site-directed mutational analyses of the HA(super sp) gene and investigating the effects of these mutations on infection in the mouse model. Potential strategies for the treatment of patients infected with highly virulent strains of influenza virus are suggested.
