Proposing a new ethos?

Article Abstract:

Many managed care health plans overly concerned with profit motives are encouraging physicians to ration bedside health care. Making clinical decisions based on financial considerations rather than a patient's needs is unethical. Private sector financing for health services faces economic difficulties similar to those confronting the Medicare and Medicaid funds. Creating financial incentives for physicians to avoid providing services will provide considerable savings for an institution while putting public health at profound risk.

Other people's lives ...

Article Abstract:

Nurse managers may need courage to confront managed care's cost cutting measures when they begin to compromise patient safety. Business decisions to cut costs have a lot more at stake in the health care industry than in other industries. Administrators want to save money; doctors and nurses want to save lives. The two goals are increasingly coming into conflict. Nurses should decide which of their fears pose dangers to themselves and others, and face them.
