The following recommendations may help nurse practitioners (NPs) in selling their practice: Weigh the pros and cons. Talk to several potential purchasers if possible. Ask potential buyers how NPs fit into their practice. Set a value on assets, including tangible assets, account receivables, and intangibles such as goodwill. Negotiate who will assume practice liabilities and what jobs will be offered to current employees. Plan on the process taking longer than expected. Involve an attorney and an accountant.

The Internet is a valuable resource for timely medical information and nurse practitioners should make sure they are knowledgeable about accessing that information. The 1996 American College of Nurse Practitioners March Summit confirmed the need for nurses to become more technologically advanced or lose their competitive edge in the health care field. Internet use has led to advanced education and increased communication opportunities.

Article Abstract:

Computer literacy can enable the nurse practitioner to gain access to many useful information sources. For example, the Internet can be used to search pharmaceutical and clinical reference texts, participate in discussion groups with other nurse practitioners, send queries, look for a job, or locate continuing education programs. The specifications for a typical computer are discussed, including explanation of the jargon terms.
