Putting the pieces in place: the patient education puzzle
Article Abstract:
Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, set up a patient family educational advisory committee as a first step in coordinating educational efforts among disciplines to improve patient care. Effective patient education turned out to be something of a puzzle, made up of interlocking pieces. Many disciplines were involved, each with an agenda, and sometimes the pieces were hard to identify and to fit to other pieces. The committee is still in the development stage, but has already come up with some very good projects and facilitated communication and collaboration across disciplines.

The patient advocate
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly necessary for obstetrician-gynecologists to defend women's health care needs as third party payors continue to dictate patient care on the basis of cost. Involvement at the regional and national level can help lift the restrictions placed by third party payors. Active community support of sex education in the schools by these specialists can help stem the tide of teenage pregnancies and HIV transmission. Careful attention to patient cues can provide counseling opportunities about domestic violence and healthy lifestyle changes.
