Article Abstract:
Physicians are significantly underinformed about the potentially disastrous effects of the Year 2000 computer transition. Inadequacies in the majority of computer systems will result in wide-scale loss of data on Jan. 1, 2000 unless necessary changes are implemented. A 1997 survey of 1,700 hospitals revealed that fewer than one-third have initiated strategies for effectively countering the date-change problem. Among medical personnel, physicians are often the least prepared for technical transformations, a major setback in this instance.

Get ready to go on-line; computers remaking medicine
Article Abstract:
Most physicians have already computerized their office management procedures, and they are also embarking on a program of automating clinical records, delivery systems and guidelines. Hewlett-Packard surveyed attendees at a conference of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, which attracted 10,000 healthcare personnel and about 400 vendors. In addition to freeing doctors from inundation in paperwork, information systems supply drug information and assist in decision support.

AMA, HCFA create group to standardize electronic claims
Article Abstract:
Electronic filing of claims is used by only about 10% of doctors, although most hospitals are processing bills electronically. To standardize the format for electronic filing of claims, the AMA and the Health Care Financing Administration are cooperating to form the National Uniform Claim Committee. The committee's first meeting, on May 23, 1995, will include representatives of providers, insurers, regulators and experts on standards.
