Regulations, payment affect stroke research

Article Abstract:

Researchers working on treatment for acute ischemic stroke have expressed concern that the regulatory and reimbursement environment is frustrating their efforts. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created unequal approval thresholds for new devices over new drugs and when the approval of the device gets linked to reimbursement, it becomes a financial disincentive.

SARS thrusts quarantine into the limelight

Article Abstract:

The Model State Emergency Health Powers Act gives states the power to quarantine people in the event of an infectious disease outbreak while still protecting civil rights to a certain extent. As of October, 2003, 36 US states have adopted this act. President Bush added SARS to the list of diseases that would be covered by quarantine laws.
