Self-referral of patients for electron-beam computed tomography to screen for coronary artery disease

Article Abstract:

Electron-beam CT imaging should be tested in clinical trials before it is made widely available to the public. This is a noninvasive technique for measuring the amount of plaque in the coronary arteries. As of Dec, 1998, there were 50 electron-beam scanners in the US, and the technique is actively marketed to consumers. However, many patients with minimal coronary artery disease can have a heart attack. Thus the technique could lead to a false sense of security. It could also lead to further testing, some of which may be unnecessary.

Impact of electron beam tomography, with or without case management, on motivation, behavioral change, and cardiovascular risk profile: a randomized controlled trial

Article Abstract:

Showing people a picture of their coronary arteries using electron beam tomography will not necessarily motivate them to change their lifestyle to prevent cardiovascular disease, according to a study of 450 US Army personnel. Intensive case management was more likely than electron beam pictures to lead to behavior change. Electron beam tomography can detect coronary artery disease in its early stage before it causes symptoms.

Lack of correlation between psychological factors and subclinical coronary artery disease

Article Abstract:

There was no link between psychiatric disorders and atherosclerosis in a study of 630 U.S. soldiers. Many other studies have demonstrated a link between depression, hostility, and anxiety and coronary artery disease.
